Auburn led much of the game, 2-0 early, 3-2 late, but eventually lost the game 4-3. Dan Glevenyak hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the third inning. Alabama won their first of these Capital City Classics, bringing the series total to 5-1 in Auburn's favor. This game does not count as a conference game, so the first conference games and series will be this weekend.
For the weekend series, Auburn (6-6) hosted a 12-2 Mercer team, that had an RPI rating of 12, and would have been ranked 26th or so if the rankings went that far. Mercer has been fielding a great team this year, which makes the weekend sweep that much better! Auburn won the first game Friday night by a score of 9-5, with Dillon Ortman picking up his third win of the season. Damek Tomscha hit a homerun in the bottom of the first inning. A crazy uniform situation happened during this game; you can read more about that here.
The Saturday game was a 4-1 win for the orange and blue Tigers. Freshman pitcher Keegan Thompson got the win and moved his starting record to 3-0. Sunday's game began with a single homerun by Damek Tomscha in the first, and a 5-2 lead heading into the 9th. Mercer scored 3 runs in the top of the final inning to tie the game. Auburn executed their plans to the fullest extent possible during the final frame of the game. A lead-off single by Jordan Ebert, Ebert eventually moved over to 3rd base with Tomscha on 2nd and Blake Austin sitting on 1st after being hit by the pitcher. Ryan Tella came up to bat and went down 0-2 in the count and fouled off countless balls before hitting a single through the infield to score Ebert and win the game walk-off style. Auburn swept Mercer for the first series sweep of the season, in what hopefully was the turning point of the season.
The new uniform records stand as
- Orange jerseys, white pants, striped stirrups 2-2
- White jerseys, white pants, plain stirrups 2-1
- Blue jerseys, white pants, plain stirrups 2-1
- Grey jerseys, grey pant 0-1
- Throwbacks, plain stirrups 1-0
We'll see if Auburn carries the momentum from this weekend into conference play this weekend versus Texas A&M at home. But before that, Auburn travels to Kennesaw State Tuesday night for a 5 p.m. first pitch, then hosts Alabama State again Wednesday night at 6 p.m., in which revenge for a bad home opening loss will more than likely be on the minds of the players. Auburn stays at home to host the Texas A&M Aggies for the weekend, with games at 6 p.m., 3 p.m., and 1 p.m. for the weekend.
Be sure to check out this team if you're in Auburn for spring break! Coach Golloway's small ball baseball is an entertaining style to watch. With some momentum and things running better with the team, the upside for this program is high right now.
