Auburn-Wisconsin: Outback Bowl Uniform Preview

It's been just over a month since Auburn played their last football game. Wisconsin played in the B1G Championship game, so they're only three weeks removed from their last game. That leaves these two teams plenty of time to rest up, study enough film to go cross-eyed, and enjoy a good week in Tampa, Fla. to bask in the sunshine. Just as I do every week, let's take a look at the uniforms these two teams will be wearing on New Year's Day.

Auburn and...Adidas? What an Apparel Contract is Actually Worth

Last Friday, it was announced that Arizona State had agreed to terms with adidas, ending a 10 year partnership with Nike. ASU and adidas had previously worked together for four years prior to Nike outfitting all Sun Devil athletics in 2004. This news initially surprised me. Arizona State and Nike worked on a giant project to rebrand their entire athletic department prior to the 2009 season. ASU is able to break out multiple new uniforms each and every year, thanks to Nike. And now they have gone from that to being outfitting by a company many believed to be slowly backing out of college football uniforms. After reading about the switch, the reason became clear. Money. Well, that's obvious, but it's true. Arizona State University Vice President for Athletics Ray Anderson has been on record trying to grow the athletic department's revenue. Which is fine and all. But when you sell naming rights for the stadiums renovation project, not the stadium itself, you have to wonder where the line is. But that's for another day.

Iron Bowl Uniform Preview

After a long season, and a long bragging rights offseason, the time has come to put everything on the line in the state of Alabama once again. The Iron Bowl is among us. We've been lucky enough to have some great, historic, championship determining games over the past few years. There are plenty of preview posts across the internet breaking down match-ups, odds, betting lines, predictions, whatever. But we do it a little different here.

Auburn - Samford Uniform Preview

In the last home football game of the year, Auburn will be welcoming one of their very own back to the Plains. 1971 Heisman Trophy Winner and current Samford University Bulldogs head coach Pat Sullivan will be returning back to Auburn, the first time as a coach since 2011, the last time Samford visited Auburn. In fact, Auburn and Samford are common opponents. According to Winsipedia (one of my favorite sites), Auburn leads the overall series 26-0-1.

Onterio McCalebb wore #22 for the 2011 Samford game in honor of T'Sharvan Bell, who was injured the week before.

Auburn - Georgia Uniform Preview

The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. The 108th edition of the Auburn - Georgia game will be played this Saturday night. Even after so many match-ups, the records are extremely tight, with Auburn leading the overall series 55-54-8. There have been so many classic games in this series. It's certainly one of the must-watch games of the college football season.

Auburn - Texas A&M Uniform Preview

The cardiac kids are back. Classic Auburn, giving everyone a heart attack at the end of games, just to pull out the win. And boy, we all just hate the way it ended up. Prayers to Laquon Treadwell.

Auburn - Ole Miss Uniform Preview

The biggest game in the Auburn - Ole Miss rivalry is going to be massive this Saturday night. The #4 Auburn Tigers (6-1) travel to Oxford, MS to take on the #7 Ole Miss Rebels/Land sharks/Black Bears/ Admiral Ackbar (6-1). We could go through the individual match ups and predict the outcome of the game. But that's not what this site is for. There's plenty of game prediction/break down posts across the internet. We do something different here.

Auburn - South Carolina Uniform Preview

For the first and only time of the season, Auburn goes up against a fellow Under Armour team in the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Gamecocks enter Jordan-Hare for the first time since 2010 with a 4-3 record, with losses to Texas A&M, Missouri, and Kentucky.

Auburn - Mississippi State Uniform Preview

Man, Saturday was fun! But this week is a completely different monster. This weekend could top off the greatest two weeks in Mississippi football history. And hopefully Auburn can put a stop to that. Last week, ESPN's College GameDay headed to Oxford for the Ole Miss - Alabama game, marking the iconic show's first trip to Oxford, let alone a game in Mississippi. We all know how that ended up. Down the road in Starkville, Mississippi State defeated Texas A&M, making way for this awesome newspaper headline. A week later, GameDay will travel down the road to Starkville, also their first trip to the home of the Bulldogs. Not to mention that #3 MSU will be playing host to #2 Auburn, and that Ole Miss jumped up to #3 as well. Must've been a good week to be in Mississippi.

Auburn - LSU Uniform Preview

When it comes to uniforms, there's nothing more constant than Auburn and LSU. Every single match-up since 1995 has been the same white-vs-blue look we've become accustomed to. The play on-field has also been constant, regardless of either team's record. The Battle of the Tigers is just a few days away.

Auburn - Louisiana Tech Uniform Preview

After a tough, grind-it-out win Thursday night on the road in Kansas, the Auburn Tigers head home for Homecoming versus the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech. These two teams have met twelve times over their history, with the first meeting being a 34-0 win for Auburn in 1941. Actually, Auburn leads the series 11-0-1, with the lone good finish for LaTech coming in 1948, with a score of 13-13. This game has been played four times since 2000, with the latest game being in 2009.

Auburn - Kansas State Uniform Preview

In a new world in which the uniform aspect of athletics has taken on a whole new level of attention, there are two basic types of teams. Teams have made a living and reputation in constantly making changes to their uniforms, trying to push the envelope of uniform design, technology, and ultimately attention they can garner. Then there are the teams that stay true to their history and rarely, if never, change their uniform designs. Just through the sheer amount of teams that belong to the former of the groups, it's pretty uncommon that we get a match up of two traditional looking teams that don't play each other on a regular basis. Kansas State and Auburn meet up in Manhattan this Thursday night in what very well could be the best looking game of the week.

National Stadium Rankings

[Editor's note: Today we have a guest entry from Nathan Deal, a former Stadium Journey contributor, who will rank the college football stadiums around the country. Nathan will rank the stadiums in an overall list, taking in many different criteria. I don't want to spoil too much, so I'll turn it over to him now -Clint]

College Football stadiums come in many different sizes, shapes and locations. Some are filled with passionate fans, some resemble a Halloween party if everyone came dressed as a bleacher. Some stadiums are beautiful, inside and out. Some stadiums are ugly. Some stadiums are really ugly. Fortunately, this list is absent of ugly stadiums (unless you consider beauty and prestige ugly.)

I should note that these stadiums are judged by the gameday atmosphere for their home team, as well as stadium quality and other factors. If it were just the stadiums themselves, the Rose Bowl would easily be at the top. However, UCLA is the Rose Bowl’s home team, and atmospheres at UCLA Football games are average in the Pac-12.

Without further adu, here are the top 25 stadiums in the beautiful sport of college football.

Auburn - San Jose State Uniform Preview

As soon as the ball is kicked off this Saturday, history will be made - Auburn and San Jose State will be playing on the gridiron for the very first time in the two school's history. In fact, San Jose State has only played a school from Alabama once, a 48-3 loss to Alabama in 2010.

2014 Auburn - Arkansas Uniform Preview

It's finally here! The beginning of another season of the greatest sport on earth is just a few days away! Today also brings the return of a very popular segment last year in weekly uniform match-up previews for Auburn and the Tigers' opponents. Every week prior to an Auburn football, a piece similar to this one will run with a short preview and history of Auburn's opponent's uniforms. It's different from all these other game preview posts, which has helped in its popularity. So, enough of my rambling, let's get to week one!

2014 NCAA Football Uniform Changes

As we get prepared for the clock to strike on yet another wonderful season of collegiate football, teams of equipment managers have been working around the clock to get all the uniforms and such ready for the beginning of the year. New trends have hit athletic uniforms like never before. And with that, many different teams have adjusted to keep with the times. Many organizations claim they help with recruiting, but we know many release new jerseys just for the retail money. Regardless of the reason, there's so many changes from year to year. I started doing this rundown three years ago now, and back then it was just documenting small changes and whatever (single) alternate helmets a team may have added. Now teams are adding 15 new uniforms, a dozen helmet designs, and are able to mix and match for a total of 125 different combinations. Sadly, my exaggerations aren't that crazy. There's already a ton of teams and uniforms to go through, so let's get started.

SEC

  1. Alabama – Alabama was updated to Nike’s most recent template prior to the 2012 National Championship game, and they’ve been updated again to the template that Oregon debuted in their 2013 bowl game. Also, check out this fan made chrome helmet for the Tide, that I think looks great. Don’t worry, it won’t see the field anytime soon. But it’s still fun to see things like this and the guy that made it did a wonderful job on it.

  2. Arkansas – Arkansas has truly had some identity crises the past few years. Thankfully Arkansas dropped their awful “anthracite” uniforms last season, and this year they have another new set (they just recently received their new uniforms in 2012 I believe). When these new uniforms were revealed, I wasn’t sold on them. But the more I look at them the more I like them. They aren’t the greatest uniforms, but they are pretty decent. They just seem a bit unfinished with the tusks or whatever on the shoulders and down the pants leg. Also, Nike designed a new Lion King-looking front facing pig head, which was the butt (no pun intended) of many jokes when it was released.

Fall 2014 Auburn Gear Overview

Football season is right around the corner. As always, every team and manufacturer has released a whole line of new on-field gear. There is so many different versions of merchandise, many of which look pretty much the same. Today we're going to go through some of the new merchandise and help you determine what's new and what's old, and how to avoid paying too much money for an older item.

Ranking the B1G

Today I wrap up the Power 5 conference uniform rankings. There's a chance I may continue and go through some of the smaller conferences, but let's concentrate today on the Big 10. The Big 10 is one of the most historic conferences, as far as football powerhouses and traditional uniforms go.

As always, this list's criteria will consist of everything regarding the football team's aesthetics over the past few years, including special alternates, manufacturer's templates, and more. And again, this list, as well as all the other ones, is my personal opinion about the uniforms. Don't get your feelings hurt because I have one team above your favorite team or think my list is completely wrong. I'm all for healthy conversation regarding these lists, so please, leave a comment below with your own rankings.

Ranking the ACC

We're over halfway finished with my conference uniform rankings, with three already finished, and at least two more to go. If you missed any, you can view the SEC, Big 12, and Pac-12 by clicking on the hyperlinks or just going to the home page of this site. Today we take a look at the eastern most conference, in the ACC. I've always found the ACC to be an interesting conference, especially in terms of uniforms. You have teams that have a classic look, yet still have alternates, and then other teams that go all out with their uniforms, and even some that don't ever change! I truly believe this will be the most difficult conference to rank because of that very fact. Now, for the criteria. Just as it's been with the previous three conferences, these rankings are based on everything there has to do with the teams' uniforms - traditional design, alternates, rebrands, manufacturer's templates, etc. And, as always, these are MY rankings. These are not THE rankings by any means. Everyone has different opinions regarding these teams and their uniforms, especially if they're a fan of that team. So please, understand this. I don't hate your team because they have a bad look. Also, I don't love your team because they have a good look. That's just how it goes. Someone has to be at the bottom of these things. With that behind us, let's get going!

Ranking the Pac-12

Two conferences (and the entire NCAA, kinda) down, at least three more to go. If you haven't checked out the previous two, you can see the SEC and Big 12 here. Today, I'll be ranking the uni-crazy Pac-12 Conference! Now, again, these are all my personal rankings. These don't reflect any scientific research, polls taken from uniform fans, UniWatch, or anything. These are mine. You will disagree with me. And I would prefer that than you agreeing with everything I say. The only thing I hope I do well are my explanations. If they make sense, and you can see where I come from on my thoughts of each team, then I'm doing something right there. Again, these rankings consist of everything about these teams' uniforms; manufacturer templates, alternates, normal uniforms, etc. Let's get going!

Ranking the Big 12

Two posts in one week? Well yes! It's a busy week here at AUD HQ to be honest. So I'm writing this pretty late Wednesday trying to get it out Thursday. Just as last time, I'm going to rank the entire Big 12 Conference by uniforms, in which I pretty much take everything into account - current uniforms, manufacturer templates, alternates, etc. If you haven't checked out the first installment of this series you can do so here. I'm interested to see what you guys think about this listing. Please leave a comment at the end of this piece with your own rankings!

Ranking the SEC

The off-season is slow. Slower for some people than others. Real slow for the uniform guy. Slower than you could imagine for the Auburn uniform guy. So, for the past few weeks I've been trying to think of new ideas for posts that would make the time go by faster, and none of those seem to come into fruition real well. That's where this series comes in. Over the next 40 days or so until college football starts, I'm going to do my own ranking of uniforms, conference-by-conference. And since this is an Auburn site, we start with the SEC today. I'll go through my ranking and reasoning, and then would like to see what you guys think by ranking these uniforms in comments below.

DIY: My Custom Helmets Project

The tough part about having a site dedicated to solely Auburn uniforms, things that don't change a whole lot, is that the off-season is extremely slow. As you've probably seen, I've only had three posts since the end of the Auburn Athletics season (and one I wish I there wasn't a reason to write about). There's still a few items left on the summer-time table that could result in a post, but it is all in wait-and-see mode at this time. So this week is a special post about my recent project.

Honoring Lutzenkirchen

Tough week to be a member of the Auburn Family. First, Jonathon Mincy, a Senior DB, was arrested Friday, June 27, on 2nd-degree marijuana possesion after being the passenger in a car going 94 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. Then, a much more difficult report was released: Beloved Auburn tightend Philip Lutzenkirchen was declared dead on the scene of his 3 AM car wreck Sunday morning. Lutz was the passenger in a car with four others, none of which were wearing their seat belts. Three people in the vehicle were ejected from the car, with the driver and Lutz dying from the incident. The driver was Georgia baseball player Joseph Ian Davis. The Auburn Family mourned the loss of the fan favorite Tiger with many memorial tweets, Facebook posts, and even an impromptu rolling of the trees surrounding the famed Toomer's Corner.

(IMPORTANT: I am in no way trying to minimalize the death of Philip Lutzenkirchen. This is simply to help get passed the events. People grieve in many different ways. This is how I and many other people have done so.)

What if...Orange Jerseys Worked?

It's summer. All Auburn athletic events are over for the time being. And boredom sets in when Auburn isn't playing, well, anything. So today I plan to start a new series that I hope can last through the long summer. This whole series will be based on "What if...?". What if Auburn had done this or that. It will all be based on uniforms throughout Auburn's history, mainly the football program. So let's get to the first installment of this new series.

Auburn Colorization: Interview

For today, I have a very special treat! A couple of weeks ago, David Bivin emailed me a couple of pictures asking for some back info. I replied with what I knew, and we began emailing back and forth. After a while, I contacted David about doing an interview with me. He obliged, so I sent him a few questions. His answers were just awesome and intriguing, so I sent some more questions! I don't want to give away anything, so let's allow David to explain everything himself.

Auburn Baseball: Mix and Match

As I was preparing for my preseason baseball posts, I went through countless photos of last year's games. The one constant thing that I noticed is that the uniforms were anything but consistent. Nearly every picture I saw consisted of random jersey, pant, and hat combinations. There were very few combinations that were always set in stone. The first year of the Golloway era has, thus far, seen absolutely no mixing of uniform aspects. Or so I thought. This past Tuesday night, in a game against South Alabama, we saw our first mix and match of Auburn baseball uniforms.

2014 A-Day Reactions

Rainy, windy and chilly. That's not what the forecast called for earlier in the week. I was expecting sunny and 75 degrees and perfect weather for the entire weekend. Then Mother Nature said "NOPE" and added a lot of rain Friday that led to a chilly and overcast and bleh Saturday. I was rained on and sunburned in the same day. That's what two baseball games and a half of a football game will do to you. I spent most of my day at the baseball games, but this post will be all about some notable things from the A-Day football game.

Those A-Day Helmet Decals

A-Day is this weekend. Thousands of people will be heading to town like it's game day in the Fall. It seems like every year the attendance record is broken. Spring games have always been odd to me, mainly because we see two (or three) uniforms from the same team at the same time. Seeing Auburn in white versus Auburn in blue (with QBs in orange) is just so strange. It's also so strange seeing the old jerseys on the field again. There's no consistency!!!

Auburn Baseball Uniform Tracker Week 8

Oh boy was it a rough week for Auburn baseball. Today's post will be short solely because of the reason.

Tuesday night Auburn hosted the Samford Bulldogs from Birmingham. Samford ended up winning 8-1 in what was a really bad night for the Tigers.

2014 NCAA Tournament Bracket Challenge

It's one of the best times of the year. Sixty-eight teams have been seeded and designated their opponents and know exactly their path they must take to be the national champions. Everyone always fills out a bracket for these games, knowing all good and well that they are more likely to get every pick wrong than having a perfect bracket. And this year makes it even tougher with people wanting Warren Buffet's $1 billion pay out for a 100 percent perfect bracket! Yea I want a piece of that! So, with this being a uniform blog and all, I thought, "what the heck, let's do a bracket based solely off the teams' uniforms!" And that's exactly what this is. I've drafted twitter friend Corbin Schindler to help me out with all this. We are both doing our own brackets in hopes of choosing the best uniform in the entire league, bracket style. Since I took the task of describing each game (stupid me), my post is very long. You'll get my bracket today and see Corbin's tomorrow.

Auburn Baseball Uniform Tracker Week 5

After a great week of baseball, the Auburn Tigers kept up their winning ways through a long week of games. Auburn played two mid-week games, one away at Kennesaw State Tuesday night, and then hosting Alabama State Wednesday night.

Justin Camp got the start Tuesday night versus the Owls of Kennesaw State and ended up with the win. The Tigers won 6-1, on 10 hits and 5 errors, to get their fourth straight win on the season. The Tigers broke out the grey uniforms for only the second time this season.

The following night, Auburn hosted Alabama State looking for revenge on the opening home game loss to the Hornets. Auburn defeated Alabama State by a score of 6-5 to add to the winning streak. Auburn broke out the throwback uniforms, including Keegan Thompson's messed up jersey. Jay Wade earned the start and win.

Auburn Baseball Uniform Tracker Week 4

After a few up and down weekends for the Auburn baseball team, things finally started clicking and coming full circle this weekend. But before a great weekend of baseball, Auburn took on Alabama in Montgomery with the Capital City Classic. The game was scheduled for Tuesday night, but because of some nasty weather the game was rescheduled for Wednesday night. The Tigers were planning to wear the orange over white uniforms the entire time, and they did indeed wear those.

Auburn led much of the game, 2-0 early, 3-2 late, but eventually lost the game 4-3. Dan Glevenyak hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the third inning. Alabama won their first of these Capital City Classics, bringing the series total to 5-1 in Auburn's favor. This game does not count as a conference game, so the first conference games and series will be this weekend.

Case of the Mysterious Baseball Uniform

Friday was a long day. Instead of heading home early for spring break, I was stuck on campus for a 1 p.m. class. A four hour trip back home to Huntsville followed the conclusion of that class. Auburn baseball opened their weekend series with Mercer Friday night at 6 p.m., on what was certainly the best night weather-wise of the entire week. I was a little down to be missing the game, simply because I was stuck in the car instead of enjoying the great weather. I was even more upset when I heard the Tigers were FINALLY breaking out the throwback uniforms for the first time this season! I got home around 6:30 or so, so I missed the first bit of the game. When I got to check twitter I saw the following picture from beat writer Jay G. Tate

Auburn Baseball Tracker Week 3

Another early week of Auburn baseball has finished. After a rough weekend hosting the Tiger Classic, the Tigers were ready for a new week to put it all behind them. The new week started on Wednesday when Auburn hosted Alabama A&M out of Huntsville, Ala.

For the midseason game versus the Bulldogs the Auburn Tigers broke out the pinstripes for the first time this season. Auburn won the game 7-3 after scoring 5 runs in the first inning and held on to hold them to one run in three separate innings.

The weekend series featured the Blue Hose (socks, seriously) of Presbyterian College out of South Carolina. The Friday night game ended in a 10-6 win for Presbyterian, with Auburn scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to fall short in their rally.

Auburn Baseball Tracker Week 2

After finishing up the Snowbird Classic in Florida with a 2-1 record, Auburn baseball headed home to host their own red robin tournament. But before that happened, the Tigers played host to Alabama State on Wednesday for the home opener. The boys went with the white on white look for the first home game. Unfortunately, the Hornets from Montgomery played spoiler, winning 9-3, in what was their first win over the Auburn Tigers.
The Tiger Classic hosted Arkansas-Pine Bluff, California, and East Tennessee State. Auburn's uniforms for the weekend are as follows:

Dissecting Auburn Uniforms: Softball

For the fifth installment of the Dissecting Auburn Uniforms feature, it's time to give softball some love. Just like baseball, the softball team went under a coaching change during this past offseason. New head Coach Clint Myers (like him already!) was hired away from his alma matter Arizona State. A lot of things change in nearly every sport when a new coaching staff is hired. However, the stick and ball sports of baseball and softball typically have more change than other sports. One thing that baseball/softball coaches have a bit more control over than other sports (say football) is the uniforms.

Auburn Baseball Tracker Week 1

So it's finally here! The new feature I've been waiting to share with you guys. I've been so excited to start this project and I'm glad it can finally get started. So here's how it will work. If you've ever visited UniWatch.com you'll notice that they have a [Oregon] Duck Tracker that they feature every Sunday. This will pretty much be the same thing as that. Every week I will have a new post that runs probably every Tuesday that shows what the team has worn the previous week. For week one, I've showcased the announced starting pitchers as models. Throughout the season I would like to be able to use every player on the team. So as the season progresses, I'll probably pick the player of the game or someone that made a great play to be modeled.

Without further delay, here is what the Auburn baseball wore in the opening weekend Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida:

Dissecting Auburn Uniforms: Women's Basketball

Now that I've completed an over view of the football, basketball, and baseball uniforms, it's time to move on and give some other sports some love. Today will be featuring the women's basketball team's uniforms. Even if you don't follow the girl's team, you'll want to read about this. There's a lot more here than you ever could know. Let's dive in.

More Old Auburn Gear

I was thinking about making this a monthly post or something, but after the last one went live, I got so many more entries. I love seeing the old gear, so I couldn't wait til next month or so to share! Some of these are just too great not to share with the interwebs. Hope you enjoy as much as I have!

I'll begin with Randy Comer, who has sent me some awesome information and pictures over the past so while. These first two pieces will be from Randy. This first one is an awesome 1990's baseball jersey that looks pretty similar to my 2005 jersey and 2006 vest.

Old Auburn Gear

I'm currently working on a few new pieces, and still juggling some new ideas for future series in my head. But in the meantime, I wanted to do something a little different. I put out a call on twitter to have people send me a picture of anything old school Auburn they had. Yes, this is similar to The War Eagle Reader's now all-but-defunct Auburn Relics series, but I didn't even think about that until long after I started receiving pictures from people.

So, the first picture that came in has to be one of my favorites. Former Auburn basketball player Kyle Davis sent me a picture of his awesome old jersey that he wore during his time here on the Plains. I'm a sucker for the old uniforms!

Auburn Logos: Then and Now

Not too long ago I was on a mission to find the Auburn style guide. Style guides are used to determine what can and can't be done to an entity's logos or wordmarks and such. It's very interesting to me, at least the Auburn one. We usually see these things surface when a team or school goes through a complete rebranding, so they aren't mentioned every day. Among finding the Auburn guide, I found a complete series of official Auburn logos, current and retired. This post will be centered around those logos.

Dissecting Auburn Uniforms: Baseball

The time is nearing. The time where fathers and sons join at the grand ole ballparks and enjoy sitting in the hot sun for hours on end with nothing but a hotdog, glove, and an ice cold Coke. The baseball season is right around the corner. Like I've done for two previous sports (football and basketball; feel free to enjoy those after you finish reading this one), I plan to dissect the uniforms that will be worn on the diamond this season to the best of my ability. Let's start with a brief history and then jump into the new uniforms.

Baseball Uniform News

I was planning to write up a Dissecting feature for the baseball team, and as I was typing it I got some very interesting news. I spent a day or two going back and forth whether I should include all this news in the featured post, but I finally decided to give it a post all to itself because it deserves all the attention (and it's pretty long). All of this information is from a very credible source that I trust and requested to remain anonymous.

Dissecting Auburn Uniforms: Basketball

Now that football season is (unfortunately) over, it's now time to turn all of our athletic attention to the basketball programs. With conference season having only started just last week, I think that it's a great time to take a detailed look into the uniforms in which the team will be wearing throughout the rest of the season. So let's dive in.
