2013 BCS National Championship Game Uniform Preview

On January 6, history will be made. Auburn and Florida State meet in one of the most historic facilities in all of sports. These two teams used to have a pretty feisty rivalry during the 1980s and early '90s. It's been a few years since these two have met, and what better way to meet back up than in the national championship at the Rose Bowl? This is going to be such a great game. And a wonderful looking game to boot. Two of the most traditional uniforms in all of college football. Let's take a look at what we should expect and a little bit of Rose Bowl history.

Auburn Football Uniform Concepts

With three more weeks until the National Championship Game, I think it's a bit early to post a uniform preview for that game yet. I'll post that with about a week or so until the game. This week I want to showcase many of the concepts out there that people want Auburn to adopt. As you can assume, there are a lot of people that want to do something different with Auburn's uniforms, whether it be for a single game or to completely overhaul the uniforms. Some of these that will shown aren't the worst thing that could happen. Others, well, you'll see.
*NOTE* I am not here saying I want Auburn to change. I am not endorsing any of these ideas. This is just to showcase people's ideas. Their opinions and ideas are theirs alone, not mine.

The Auburn Football Uniform Argument

For as long as I can remember, there have been people out there that have argued that Auburn's stripes should all match. Personally, I don't think so. But I'm here to document the argument and show what people are truly wanting.

2013 SEC Championship Game Uniform Preview

Let me just start by saying I LOVE AUBURN! Man, Saturday night was such a blast. Storming the field like we did will forever be a wonderful memory. On to Atlanta!

2013 Iron Bowl Uniform Preview

It's time. Time for everything this team has been working for to show why they have been working so hard for it. Time for standing in the student section for every home game last year and staying all game every game to be even more worth it. The game to decide the SEC West. The game that could very well decide the National Champion participants. The Game. That simple.

Dissecting Auburn's Uniforms: Football

For the bye week, instead of doing some uniform preview post, I have a special treat. Today, I will be dissecting the football uniforms worn by the Auburn Tigers. There's a lot more than you think that goes in to these, and a lot has changed over the last few years. Let's get to it.

Auburn - Georgia Uniform Matchup Preview

It's that time of year again. It's finally time for the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. We all know that Auburn's very first football game was versus Georgia in 1892. It's been a long and heated rivalry over the years, and this year will be no different.

Auburn - Tennessee Uniform Matchup

Oh boy, that was an ugly win. But I'll take that W and am loving being 8-1 in November! And I predicted Arkansas's uniform combo, so there's that too!! Anyways, on to this week.

Auburn - Arkansas Uniform Matchup

After another week and another W, we turn our attention to the Razorbacks of Arkansas. Records aside, I have a feeling this game this weekend will be a decent one (for a half at least). For as potentially ugly as the score may get, the on field uniform matchup will be even more ugly.

Arkansas has always had an identity crisis of sorts when it comes to their uniforms. I swear they've had at least five or six different sets since the turn of the century. And what they have now are by far the worst. Arkansas and Nike unveiled this current set last year, but they tweaked them a little this year, but so little no one will ever know unless they were told (it was the color of a helmet decal on one of their helmet colors for what it's worth).

I understand trying to go for the "Razorback" stripe on the shoulder, but it just doesn't work. Unfortunately too. I've never been a fan of silly shoulder thingys, but this is just as bad as it gets. And what makes it worse is they have a full black set. Yuck.

Who knows what to expect with this team. I would bet that the Razorbacks will wear their red jerseys with white pants. I'm leaning more towards them wearing their red lids as well. They have only worn the white lids once by my count this season, so it wouldn't be a complete surprise if we see a White-Red-White look come Saturday.

This is what we saw last year for reference:

The Razorbacks Equipment team has a twitter page, and the Facebook page has posted the uniform combo before this season, so if anything comes up, I shall update in a new post.

Let's show Bielema exactly how real football is played. And how real men playing football dress at that.

Auburn - Florida Atlantic Uniform Preview

For as good as last week looked on the field, it was that much better of a game! Way to go Tigers!

But (Coach speak warning), it's time to stop celebrating last week and look ahead to this week's game. As the players study film and the upcoming opponent, I shall go a less serious and demanding route. Let's look at the uniform matchup we can look forward to this weekend!

AU-TAMU Uniform Matchup Update

As I posted yesterday, I had no clue exactly what Texas A&M would wear. But now we know a little bit more. The Aggies are planning a "Maroon Out" this weekend. But, that doesn't necessarily mean that the team will wear all maroon. Take Oregon for example- they release a schedule every year telling their fans what color to wear to "Color Out" the stadium. The odd thing is, the team on the field usually wears the opposite color, never matching their fans in the stands. But for a team like Texas A&M, that, as far as I know, doesn't do this kind of thing very often, I would expect them to follow suit and actually wear all maroon.

What we do know is that Texas A&M will be wearing Breast Cancer Awareness shirts at some point in the day (either pre-game or as under shirts). Adidas has provided this same shirt to other teams, and they have worn pink accessories, so I wouldn't be surprised to see those this weekend.

Game 7 Uniform Matchup

I'm thinking about doing something new for this blog. Adding a uniform matchup post for each game, posting what the possible combinations or the confirmed uniform combo for the weekend will be. For the first installment of this series, I will feature Auburn vs. Texas A&M.

I'm not into doing the stats of a matchup, but this will be the fourth overall game between Auburn and Texas A&M. TAMU leads the series 3-0. The game has never been played in College Station.

Update 10-9-13

I know that this site was supposed to be set up for Auburn basketball uniforms only, but since that research project has slowed down so much, I am stretching out into other aspects of the uniform world right now. I thought about starting a new blog altogether, but I realized I don't have enough content (or a name...) for another site. So, this site will be more so overall uniforms and what I think is necessary for being written up, than just Auburn basketball. The AU Basketball Uniforms tab will still exist, and everything will be posted there as well. And now that I have more content to add here, I will obviously be using this site more, and have also updated some things. The new Twitter widget has been added to the right side bar. If anyone has ideas (I would love an awesome background design if anyone would like to help), please let me know.

Thank you to everyone that continues to read this site. I hope to make it much better and update much more.

Auburn Wearing White Late in the Season

With LSU wearing white at home like usual nowadays, Auburn didn't get the chance to break out the white tops that weekend. Also, with Auburn playing five of its first six games of the 2013 season at home, that means the Tigers have worn blue all season thus far. That, the following tweet from @TheTigerTalk, got me thinking- "When was the latest that Auburn wore white for the first time that season?"

After a little research, and some help from @AU_History, I have discovered the answer!

2013 NCAA Football Uniform Tracker

I know this isn't Auburn basketball, but it is still uniforms, and it is what I've been working on for so long. I had to post this in two parts on, but I'm just going to post it all right here. It's just that long. There were about 70 teams or so that are listed, and I could still add some more. I hope you enjoy this post, I may do more on something like this in the future.

War Eagle!

I’m going to start this off with a few of the new NCAA rules that affect uniforms, then start going down the list, starting with the SEC.

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Sorry to everyone that reads this. I know it has been a very long time since I have posted anything new. I had to take a break from researching everything in order to get ready to head back to Auburn for school. And lately, I've been working on a college football uniform tracker for This post is already going to be two separate parts for their site, but I'm thinking of posting it on here in full. I hope once I get used to my schedule this year, I can start researching more basketball uniforms, now that I have much better resources here in Auburn, with the archives in the library, and potential to access records in the athletic department. We'll see how it all goes.

Thank you, War Eagle.

1950-67 Uniform

I thought I'd take a break from the more recent years' sets, and work my way to the past. Pictures are even harder to come by from these years, but thankfully, Auburn's Glomerata (the yearbook) is posted online, from 1897-2003, so I have many pictures from back then.

Ralph "Shug" Jordan, yes the famed football coach, coached many (if not all) of these teams during this time period. The 1959-60 team actually won the SEC Championship.

(Remember, the earlier uniforms consisted of the short shorts, yet my template does not convey that very well. So I tried my best to keep it as close as possible to the old shorts. Hopefully they don't look too far off)

As you can see, Auburn wore the same template for both their uniform sets. I did not find any pictures of an orange uniform. And all pictures from here to further in the past are all in black and white, so any color is more or less a guess on my part. All striping on these uniforms are smaller than depicted here. The numbers and wordmarks were huge back then. Maybe not quiet this big, but bigger than usual. The team also wore real belts back then, and I love their orange belts.

I know content is slowing down, but it is taking much more time and research into the older uniforms. Stay with me and hopefully I'll make more progress real soon!

I know the next set in order would be from 2003-04, but I'm still working on those. So, we shall skip to the great season of 1999-2000. What would be a season full of wins, amazing dunks, an SEC Championship, and a Sweet 16 appearance, Auburn showed up in what were certainly some unique uniforms. Auburn actually had three different designs of uniforms. Not just three different colors, but different designs. Check it out-

As you can see, none of these are the same, as it is the norm today. The orange uniform has a wide white stripe, with sweeping blue stripes, on ONE side of the uniform (much like the 2013 uniforms, which I thought were the first to feature this.). The white uniform features tiger striped collar and armholes, with an odd AU logoed V-neck block. The blue uniform features the same pant and side stripe design as the white, but the collar and armhole stripes match the rest of the uniform, versus the tiger striping on the white uniforms.

The number font matches on the white and orange ones, but the AUBURN insignia on the front matches the white and the blue. The blue set even has an orange AU on the belt, the white set has the Eye of the Tiger logo, and the orange ones have nothing in that place. How odd is it to see a team use such completely differing templates in the same season?

It's a good thing this team won on the court, because keeping up with these uniforms was no small task. Searched through videos, pictures, old Glomeratas, and everthing else.

I chose to feature three different players instead of the usual one because of course, the three different templates, the fact that these three were some of the greatest Auburn players of the decade, and, if I wanted to feature just one player, Chris Porter's #4 wouldn't show off the unique number font, like Doc Robinson's #50 and Mamadou N'Diaye's #34.

I'm still working on the seasons I'm missing so far. Please share some info if you have any.

Thanks, War Eagle!

2005-06 Throwback Uniforms

The SEC celebrated 80 years of basketball back in 2005. To honor the occasion, every SEC team threw back to a team specific year. Auburn chose 1985, which was the great year of SEC Champions, Sweet 16 appearance, and Charles Barkley.

All SEC teams wore this "Eight Decades" patch-

Auburn's throwback uniforms looked like this-

Note the black memorial armband on the blue uniforms. I'm currently researching to figure out exactly what the band memorialized, but if anyone knows, please share!

(I said I wanted to complete the 2000s by the weekend, but that goal is getting even tougher. Pictures are few and far between of the years I'm working on. Hopefully I can still hit this goal!)

2004-05 Uniforms

Following the completion of the 2003-04 season, Auburn basketball was under NCAA investigation, and then head coach Cliff Ellis was fired. Auburn soon hired new head coach Jeff Lebo, and the Lebo era began. 2004 also marked the year of new uniforms for the Tigers. Russell Athletic created a unique look for the basketball court. New word mark, new font, almost new everything. And boy was it brutal (the number font especially)-

White or orange striping down the sides, down the shorts, around the bottom hem or the shorts, and near the arm hole. Arched NOB. Brutal number font. Let's just say these look better in this template than on the court. But then again, the quality (and number) of pictures from this season aren't very high...
I know that the colors on the white uniform are correct, but coloring (especially the NOB color) for the blue and orange are just guesses. If you happen to have info, pictures, etc...regarding these, please share so I can update these to the exact specs.
This now completes seven different uniforms that were worn by Auburn. Just wait, the older ones are even weirder.

2005-06 Uniforms

Auburn and Under Armour inked a new contract on December 1, 2005, which meant that the 2005-06 athletic season would be the final season outfitted by Russell Athletic, which was based in Alexandria City, only 45 minutes from campus. Russell's last year was also the 100th year of Auburn basketball, which celebrated the occasion by wearing this wonderful patch:

Auburn played it's first varsity game of basketball on January 19, 1906, where the Tigers beat Tulane 27-17. That year the team finished 5-1-1. The team was coached by legendary football coach Mike Donahue. One of the five wins consisted of beating the other legendary coach John Heisman's Georgia Tech team. Two of Auburn's most important, famous, and influential football coaches faced off against each other, as coaches, in basketball, in Auburn's first year of playing. How incredible is that?
Oddly enough, that patch was the only one that the basketball team wore (other than the Russell Athletic patch on the shorts); no conference patch, no maker's patch, nothing but that. What is a really good looking patch was brought down significantly by the ugly uniforms worn that year, and the year prior. Random is the only word to describe these. Random stripes all over the place. Look-
White or orange striping down the sides, down the shorts, around the bottom hem or the shorts, and near the arm hole.
Thank you, War Eagle, and see you for the next post.

2007-08 Uniforms

The 2008 calendar year was the 75th anniversary for the SouthEastern Conference. To commemorate, the SEC designed this nice 75 year logo. This logo was worn as a patch on many (not sure if all) SEC athletic teams during the year. Football and basketball both wore them as jersey patches.

As far as Auburn basketball uniforms went for in 2007-08, the patch was the only difference from the previous year.

White or orange piping blazon the jersey and pants, down the side, down the pants, across the chest, and across the back of the pants. Small white or orange block and bottom of V-neck. Small AU logo below blocked off V-neck. Under Armour logo on left thigh, AU logo on lower right pant leg. "TIGERS" written on the back left leg (this seemed to be hit or miss, as it was on some pictures, but not others. Same goes for 2006-07 and 2006-07 uniforms.)
This completes the Under Armour era uniforms. I still plan to complete the 2000s by this week, but pictures get tougher and tougher to come by as we go further in the past. Stick with me and hopefully some of the readers out there have some good pictures of older uniforms they are willing to send me.
Thanks and War Eagle!

2006-07 Uniforms

2006 was the first year that Under Armour outfitted Auburn's basketball team, after signing with UA in December of 2005. With the inaugural design, Under Armour went with something a little different as far as basketball uniforms go.

Same goes for 2006-07 uniforms.)

(I know the back view of these contain a V-neck. That was in the original template design, and I forgot to erase it.)

Episode four complete. Let's see if I can knock out all of the 2000s and possibly late 1990s by the end of the week.

War Eagle!

2008-09 Uniforms

2008 was the first year to feature the circle SEC logo on the Auburn basketball uniforms. The logo has been on the left chest ever since. On November 8, 2008, Virgil Starks, Auburn's athlete counselor and academic supporter, passed away. To honor Starks, all Auburn athletic teams wore a VS logo with a graduation cap and tassel on it. The logo is as followed:
The VS logo was worn on the right chest of the basketball uniforms after the November 19th game versus Mercer, which means they played one game between Starks's death and the addition of the path. This is what the uniforms look like with both patches.

Same goes for 2006-07 uniforms.)

This is the last year this uniform design was worn, as Under Armour soon rolled out their new 2009-12 design. The 2008-09 season was also the final season played in Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum. The following seasons were and continue to be played in the new Auburn Arena. This logo was placed on the court of BEMC during the final season.

Three designs down, many many more to come. Thanks for reading!

War Eagle!

2009-12 Uniforms

In 2009, Under Armour released new uniforms for the Tigers. I honestly don't remember the announcement, if there even was one, but this was a few years before I truly began following uniform changes. In what was a bold change at the time, these uniforms were much cleaner and bolder. 2009 was also the first season of hopefully many to come being played in the new Auburn Arena

Double colored collar contrasting with the body color. "Tiger striped" shorts allow for all three colors to be showcased at the same time. Tight "V" shape on the jersey stopping an inch or so short of the armpit. Nicely sized AU logo on back of jersey just below the collar. "AUBURN" and "TIGERS" are written on the shorts above the end of the top pant stripe on the back of the leg. Arched "AUBURN" wordmark on the chest of the jersey. Under Armour UA and SEC circle logo on the left and right chest respectively. UA logo on left thigh, AU logo on right thigh of shorts.

This concludes the second chapter in this very long project. These uniforms were actually the first I made on Photoshop, so I apologize for some of the sloppiness, and the fact that the short stripes are not spot on, which is a tough task, as you can see in this picture.

As I said, the database photo is not spot on. But at least you can see what it looked like in person.

Thank you for reading this chapter. Again, let me know what you think of these uniforms, the way I'm going about this whole project, ways to improve, and please relate older pictures of older uniforms to me if you get the chance.

Thanks again,
War Eagle!

2012-14 Uniforms

Since cameras, photos, and social media make pictures more plentiful and better quality, this journey will start backwards, from now to the past. This is the quickest way to get some content on this site. Pictures of older Auburn basketball years are difficult to come by. So why tire myself out on the old stuff? Exactly. Let's start with the past season.

In what was an extremely disappointing season (my freshman year at Auburn), the Tigers did have some unique, asymmetric uniforms that were a great sight to see, given the record of this team.

As you can see from above, Under Armour went a little out on a limb with this set. Northwestern-stripes inspired by the football team are placed on the right shoulder and left short leg. Lines cut into stripes at angles, which seem a bit random and unnecessary. Big AU on the right short leg pays tribute to many old school Auburn basketball uniforms. AU-logoed "belt buckle" on the waist band is a cool touch. Under Armour square neck rather than typical V-neck. Small AU button on back of jersey right beneath the collar. Under Armour UA on left chest and left waist. SEC circle logo on right chest. These (along with the previous 2009-12 uniforms) are my favorite uniform set of the 2000s, which isn't saying much, as you'll soon learn.

Episode 1 of many stories complete. Hope you enjoyed this entry, hope you'll join me for the rest to come. Feel free to comment on your opinions of these uniforms, as well as ideas as to how I can improve this blog. It's new, I'm new to blogging and uniform database-ing, so go easy on me please!

War Eagle!

P.S. If you have any photos of old Auburn basketball uniforms (2008 and earlier) please share with me!

Welcome to the Auburn Basketball Uniform Database. Auburn basketball is a storied program. Over the 100 plus years of Auburn basketball, the uniforms worn by the Tigers has changed with the ever changing times. This blog is dedicated to searching through as many old pictures and documents as it takes to document ever single uniform design down the simplest details ever worn on a basketball court by the Auburn University Tigers.

War Eagle and thank you for joining me on this journey!
